Rats vs Mice for Snakes: When to Switch
Ball pythons switch early: feed hopper or small mice for about 6–8 meals, then move to a Fuzzy rat. Other snakes switch once they've outgrown jumbo mice and would need two or more per meal. Either way, move to the rat closest in weight to what your snake eats now (a small mouse, 11–13g, steps up to a Fuzzy rat, 14–20g), and scent it with a mouse if your snake hesitates.
Why rats
Our mice top out at Jumbo (30g+). Our rats go from Pinky (1–13g) to Jumbo (301g+), so one rat of the right weight replaces two or three mice. That means less thawing and fewer snakes losing interest halfway through a meal. Both are whole prey and a complete diet, so feeding the right weight matters more than the species.
Who switches
Ball pythons switch early. Start a baby on hopper (7–11g) or small (11–13g) mice, depending on its size, for about 6–8 meals. Then move to a Fuzzy rat (14–20g) and step up rat sizes as it grows. Our Weaned (31–45g) and Small (46–70g) rats are listed for sub-adult and adult ball pythons. Many corn snakes, king snakes, milk snakes and hognose stay on mice for life. A common keeper guideline is a meal of about 10–15% of a growing snake's body weight; when in doubt, size down. This is general guidance, not veterinary advice.
How to switch
- Match the weight. Pick the rat closest in grams to what your snake eats now.
- Scent the rat. Rub a thawed mouse against it, or thaw them in the same bag, so it smells like familiar food.
- Keep the routine. Same day, same time, same tongs. You can offer a mouse first and the rat right after.
- Be patient. If it refuses, go back to mice for a meal and try again next feeding day. If your snake is losing weight, see a reptile vet.
Mouse size to rat size, by grams
Match by weight, not by name. A "Small" mouse and a "Small" rat are very different meals.
| Mouse size | Mouse weight | Nearest rat size | Rat weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pinky | 1–3g | Pinky | 1–13g |
| Peach Fuzzy | 3–5g | Pinky | 1–13g |
| Normal Fuzzy | 5–7g | Pinky | 1–13g |
| Hopper | 7–11g | Pinky | 1–13g |
| Small | 11–13g | Fuzzy | 14–20g |
| Medium | 13–17g | Fuzzy | 14–20g |
| Large | 17–30g | Fuzzy or Pup | 14–20g or 21–30g |
| Jumbo | 30g+ | Weaned | 31–45g |
For a Large mouse, go by its actual weight: lighter ones match a Fuzzy rat, heavier ones a Pup. After Weaned, rats keep stepping up through Small, Smedium, Medium, Large and Jumbo. See the rat collection or the mouse collection.
Rats vs mice: FAQ
- When should I switch my ball python from mice to rats?
- Early. Feed hopper or small mice, depending on your ball python's size, for about 6–8 meals, then move to a Fuzzy rat (14–20g). From there, step up rat sizes as it grows.
- What size rat replaces a jumbo mouse?
- A Weaned rat (31–45g). It's the closest rat size by weight to a jumbo mouse (30g+).
- Are rats more nutritious than mice?
- Both are whole prey and a complete diet for a snake of the right size. Feeding the right weight, and not overfeeding, matters more than choosing rats or mice.
- My snake refuses rats. What should I do?
- Scent the rat with a thawed mouse, keep the routine the same, or offer a mouse first and the rat right after. If it still refuses, go back to mice for a meal and try again next time.
- Do corn snakes need to switch to rats?
- Usually not. Many corn snakes eat mice their whole lives. Our Pinky rats (1–13g) are also listed for adult corn and king snakes if you want to offer them.
